Refining Gameplay and Narrative for an Adventure Puzzle Platformer

The Challenge
A global gaming studio sought to gather player feedback for a new puzzle platformer. The primary goal of this testing phase was to gather detailed player feedback on puzzle navigation, AI companion balance, game progression and artistic direction. The gameplay featured both solo play and online co-op modes, therefore requiring different testing sessions to understand the experience across the different modes and aspects.
Our Approach
The study involved four playtesting sessions, conducted over two days. Each session was designed to facilitate both in-depth gameplay exploration as well as dynamic group discussions. Held at a specialist research facility in central London, the facilities included a dedicated discussion area and a high-end “Pro Room” equipped with state-of-the-art gaming PCs. The setup delivered an engaging and immersive experience for participants, but also a valuable opportunity for the development team to see players playing firsthand, and to bring the user experience to life
The Outcome
The research provided the studio with actionable insights into how players engaged with both gameplay modes and their reception of the characters and story. Feedback highlighted areas to refine the puzzles, enhance the co-op experience, and further develop the visual and narrative elements. This player-driven feedback informed the next phase of development, ensuring the game aligned with audience expectations and maintained the studio's reputation for delivering deeply immersive, atmospheric titles.
